From Kazakhstan to Macon
Dr. Andrew Manis, center, associate professor of history at Macon State, discusses his book about the history of local race relations with members of a delegation from Kazakhstan studying the U.S. civil rights movement. On the left is Nari Shamayeva, who has headed the Prosecutorial Oversight of Investigations Unit in her country for several years and covers all crimes, including human trafficking. On the right is Alim Bazhikbayev, who is responsible for coordinating anti-trafficking operations and operative officers in his region. Their November 16 visit to the Macon State campus was sponsored by the Georgia Council for International Visitors. They were accompanied by Richard George, local GCIV representative; Norman Gelman, interpreter; and Gene Henry, GCIV driver. While participating in the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program, Shamayeva and Bazhikbayev discussed enforcement of international human rights standards and anti-trafficking operations in the U.S. While in Macon, they also visited the Tubman African American Museum and Wesleyan College.
